I’m not one for the spotlight.
That’s probably why I’m hiding part of my face behind Marlon Brando Mendoza (RIP). It’s also why I started out in journalism. I like learning about other people and telling their stories through photography or writing.
I still enjoy storytelling but want to extend it to my new career in Advertising as a copywriter and marketer. The journey to this path has been an interesting one, including various jobs like au pair, server, program manager, and freelancer. I’ve learned how to hold 4 cups at once, do the Charleston to distract children so they’ll eat their vegetables, and handle radio personalities. Not sure if this has helped my writing but as Dan Nelken told me, “Your superpower is you. And one of your unfair advantages is your late start. Because you have more life experience, the source for all creativity.”
I can’t wait to see what the future holds for me, as long as chai lattes and my cats (Sokka and Katara) are there too.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why a FAQ for Elizabeth Mendoza’s website?
Great question! I think Elizabeth just wanted to try something different in which she showed her personality and interests in a different way than a paragraph that someone may or may not read. Maybe this will be more digestible and fun! If not, at least she can say she tried.
So, who is Elizabeth Mendoza?
Wow. Way to go deep. She’s still trying to figure that out but she can start with the basics. Born and raised in a small town in North Carolina, she says y’all with the ease and grace of someone who used to say y’ouns (a word very unique to her part of NC, don’t worry, she doesn’t say it anymore). She is also a first-generation daughter of Mexican parents so her Spanglish is immaculate. When her P1 professor, Rohitash Rao, asked her to bring 3 pieces of media that influenced her the most she brought The Godfather DVD, a Beyonce photobook, and her Buffy graphic novel. Those are pretty good indicators of her creative influences. She is also the mother of two cats, Sokka and Katara, and is constantly pressuring her boyfriend to let her foster more.
What drives Elizabeth Mendoza?
A good story, be it a good book, movie, TV Show, or joke that makes her laugh so hard she cries. If there is good background music that’s a good motivator too, she hates silence. She can’t drink coffee so she settles for a chai latte (but has to have it every day so maybe she’s just as addicted as others are to coffee?). She also loves food and if some is waiting for her after a hard day’s work, she can be unstoppable.
What’s next for Elizabeth Mendoza?
Well, right now, she just graduated with her Master’s in Advertising at UT-Austin. She’s trying to accomplish her reading challenge of 23 books. She would like to work as a copywriter somewhere. She’s just doing the best she can.
